Essaouira – 1 Week Tour of Morocco

CLICK HERE FOR DAY TRIPS FROM ESSAOUIRA

Day 1 and 2 – Essaouira

We will collect you from the airport and transfer you to your Riad in Essaouira. Enjoy two days exploring this atmospheric Moroccan town.

There is plenty to see here in addition to the 10km of sandy beach. The fishing harbour is thriving and with the smell of citrus and spice in the air, you can have their fresh daily catch grilled for you on hot coals at the open-air stands. The confusing maze of a medina, where the pretty, narrow lanes are crammed with houses adorned with cobalt blue shutters and doorways, is just as important to locals as to tourists and the woodworkers are still crafting their thuya wood as though time has stood still.

Perfect for pottering, the souks are hassle free in comparison to Marrakech. Renowned for its rich and varied handicrafts, there are zocos (markets) all over the city filled with textiles, jewellery, ceramics, musical instruments and handmade wooden items. Art galleries, bars and small boutique shops are nestled between an abundance of café’s  –  perfect for people watching and chatting with the locals while sipping mint tea and chilling out.

Overnight Essaouira – breakfast included

Day 3 – Marrakech

After breakfast today we will drive to Marrakech. Situated in the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains, this  is an intoxicating city known for its souks, spices, snake charmers and hidden palaces, though these days it’s prized as much for its trendy art galleries, hip hotels and elegant hammams.

Recently named World’s No 1 Destination by Trip Advisor – The famous souk (market) houses over 60,000 stalls full of colourful handmade wares. For sheer entertainment, head to the open space of Jemaa el Fna. Thronging with locals each evening, the legendary central square hosts dozens of food stalls, serving up a huge variety of (mostly) high quality street food. Meanwhile, a mix of musicians, fortune-tellers, dancing cobras, storytellers and acrobats keep the crowds entertained until late.

For something a little more relaxing, the breath-taking Majorelle Gardens, also known as the Yves Saint Laurent memorial gardens, are the perfect place to unwind.

Overnight Marrakech – breakfast included

Day 4 – Skoura Oasis

We will depart Marrakech at 9 am this morning and drive to Skoura Oasis via the Tizi n Tichka Pass, at 2260m, the highest road pass in Morocco. There are panoramic views of the High Atlas Mountains and magnificent landscapes with scenery peppered by small Berber villages typical of the region.

We continue along the Road of One Thousand Kasbahs before reaching Ouarzazate, home of Morocco’s movie industry. Enjoy a visit to the movie studios and see where films such as Gladiator and the Mummy were shot.  Explore the city and make a visit to Kasbah Taourirt, once one of the largest Kasbahs of the area, and also once home to members of the Glaoui Dynasty, who ruled the vicinity. Parts of this Kasbah have been carefully restored by UNESCO and it is probably the main sightseeing venue of Ouarzazate.

Finally, we will arrive at Skoura Oasis, with its huge palm groves and views of the Atlas mountains.

Overnight in the Oasis – dinner & breakfast included

Day 5 – Sahara Desert

After breakfast, we will depart to explore the Dades Valley, country of figs,  before arriving at the charming oasis city of Tineghir with its 2000 year old mellah (Jewish quarter). The city of Tineghir is famed for being one of the most beautiful oases in Southern Morocco. and the scenery here is truly breathtaking.

Continuing on to Todra Gorge we have free time to trek the 300m canyons. These are the result of a massive fault in the plateau dividing Jebel Sarhro from the High Atlas. At the base of the canyon there is a crystal clean river cutting through the coloured rock – amazing location for walking and taking photos.

After visiting the fascinating fossil workshop, we will head for the Erg Chebbi sand dunes, indisputably one of Morocco’s most stunning sites. Some of the dunes here are almost 250m. Enjoy the adventure of a camel ride to the oasis where our camp is located and after a moonlit dinner and drumming around the camp-fire, sleep in Berber tents or perhaps star gazing under the magical Saharan night sky.

Overnight in Berber Camp (upgrade available to Luxury Desert Camp) dinner and breakfast included

Day 6 – Ait Ben Haddou

We recommend waking in the desert dawn to watch the huge sun rise over the dunes, this is a once in a lifetime, magical experience. Then after breakfast we will drive to the UNESCO World Heritage cultural site of Ait BenHaddou, via Agdz. Ait Ben Haddou is a ksar (fortified village) on the ancient caravan route that camel traders used. Once an important stop, it is the best-preserved kasbah in Morocco.

Overnight in Ait Ben Haddou – dinner and breakfast included

Day 7 – Essaouira

Today we will head back to Essaouira via the Tizi n Tichka pass and Marrakech. There will be time for a final evening in Essaouira, perhaps enjoying live music in one of the roof top bars,  before the transfer home tomorrow.

Overnight in Essaouira – breakfast included
